My gut forgives me
Today I am sharing a poem inspired by a prompt from Jarod K Anderson in his Sunday Seeds #10 newsletter found here. Please go check out his work.
Before reading, please note the CW: body dysmorphia and disordered eating. While the theme of this poem is heavy, I do believe it is written more along the tune of redemption and devotion than anything. Regardless, I wanted to give ya’ll a heads up.
“Why do you hate me?” My gut whines again Words coughed around Food And I am tired “It’s better than it was.” I whisper this, gulping down Acidic nectar and I can’t think of Food A belly has stretched and given Insides clawed to be outside “It’s better than it was.” I say this again Proof of life Choke down so-called Food Recovery and miles to trek “It could be better.” My answer is Rueful smile and lips pressed tight together no food Now A gut, organs, meat MiraculousIs an understatement“I forgive you” My body says Defiant Wretched sob Ground pressed to my palms I know nothing useful of Food I have thecouragestrength to change what I can I will accept the Past is the past I have the wisdom to know When to ask for help To whisper back “Thank you”
