A 100 day project, or two; and an art witch community
One of the exciting things that came into being with the new year is Art for a Spell, the art witch community from Meghann and the Moon. Very excited to be a contributing teacher in this space and to connect with such a beautiful community. If you feel called to explore the intersection between art and magic, go check out the info to sign up here. Membership includes two full lessons a month, a monthly tarot reading and a chat with me or journal with me. Exciting magic is happening over there so be sure to check it out!
I have also found a longing to push myself again in my artwork, but in a way that feels nourishing. Since completing Peachtober, my brain has buzzed around thinking of so many possibilities. I am deciding on the 100 day project. I am doing 100 dress paintings, and 100 collages. I’m also trying to be very breezy about the whole thing. I already started each project on different days, which was going to bother me BUT I decided not to let it bother me. Art is art. This is challenging because my inner critic is just ready to start screaming all of the awful things that would make me quit.
I’m going to let her. The inner critic, I mean. She can say what she needs to say. She will feel heard. And then I will paint. I will rip, tear, glue. And I’ll write about it. 2023 has taught me that the narrative I thought was apart of my DNA — that I was incapable of following through on commitments to myself and to my creativity, is false. Everyday of creation is evidence to support this new hypothesis of life. I don’t have to lay my creativity down as a sacrifice for motherhood, for domesticity, or for being realistic. These two series are a celebration of my sobriety, and the life that can grow even in soil we believe to be broken. We can change how we perceive the world, and how we perceive ourselves.
So far the dresses will be shown on my drawing account on IG starmothdraws, and I am sharing the collages in my feed and stories on IG under starmothpress. I am trying to remain flexible in how I share these works. I do intend to write reflections but intend to allow them to come naturally. I don’t want to promise any forced reflections. I will continue to update here, and in my archive.
Finally, I completed a journal last night and shared the flip through on my channel this morning. This journal feels almost like a time capsule, transporting me back to meet the version of myself who made each page. I love to see the progress of each step I made over the last year.
